RATE INCREASE FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1. Why are rates increasing?
Rates are increasing because the Cooperative’s costs have increased substantially. The distribution system costs have increased
dramatically. In 2024 alone, these costs increased by 8.6%. In particular the cost of
materials most commonly used to build or maintain the distribution system have increased
by over 10% per year for 5 years. Despite strong efforts to control costs, rates must
increase to maintain the financial strength of the Cooperative.
2. How much are rates increasing?
Rates are increasing approximately 5%
3. What is increasing?
All components of rates are increasing – the “fixed” or customer charges and the
“volumetric” or per kWh energy charges. If applicable, demand charges are also
increasing. For example, for the most common rate (Rural Domestic), the customer charge
will increase by $2.00 per month and the energy charge will increase by $0.00606 per kWh.
4. Whose rates are increasing – just residential customers or are increases applicable to
others?
As much as possible – the 5% rate increase was applied across all rate classes and
customers. The only exception is for rental lights. The rental charge for all area lights will
increase by a fixed amount of 50 cents per light per month.
5. What about the Beat the Peak program – isn’t that lowering costs?
Yes! Beat the Peak, the new Willis Solar Facility, and the Standby Generator programs are
all reducing wholesale power costs. Wholesale power costs are “passed through” on a
dollar-for-dollar basis via the Energy Cost Adjustment (ECA) in rates. In other words –
savings associated with those programs are immediately passed on to members each month.
Lower wholesale power costs associated with the savings from Willis, Beat the Peak, and
the Standby Generator programs have already offset the majority of the coming
Distribution Rate increase.
6. Will the rate increase impact my capital credits?
No. The balance of capital credits is based on the margins made in previous years.
However, the increase will enable the Cooperative to retire capital credits on the targeted
25-year basis. Ensuring adequate margins to retire capital credits after 25 years is sound
equity management policy and it is fair to those members that enabled the margins to be
earned in the first place.
7. When will the rate increase take effect?
November 1, 2026. The impact will be seen on bills delivered in December of 2026.
